Education & Training

woman teaching distance learning class via videoconferencing

Traditional education has always been limited by the four walls of the classroom. Videoconferencing can knock down these walls and make the entire world readily accessible to students. Just think of the possibilities (many of which are already being explored in schools all around the world):

  • Classrooms at various locations can collaborate while learning about other cultures. Being able to participate visually and verbally in other cultures increases a student's interest and motivation to learn.
  • Field trips can be replaced with visits across the globe.
  • Teachers can consult with other teachers and experts in various fields.
  • Students in language classes can speak to new friends anywhere in the world and practice their language skills to learn the dialect and pick up some new, hip vocabulary.
  • Through videoconferencing, students have interviewed their teacher on an expedition in Antarctica, attended animal demos at the Smithsonian National Zoo, and collaborated on developing a new technology for astronomy equipment at the graduate level.
  • Videoconferencing also provides students with more access to experts from around the world and additional resources that would otherwise be unavailable.
  • Students can obtain tutoring and individualized training.
  • Educational opportunities can be provided to anyone, anywhere, regardless of how remote their location, as long as they have electricity and access to an Internet-enabled computer.

Educators are finding that students feel more accountable with face-to-face collaborative learning via videoconferencing. Failing to complete an assignment is painful when you have to look your fellow student in the eye. Some experts have also suggested that videoconferencing demands better teaching materials and preparation on the teacher's part. The teacher needs to be well prepared in order to measure up to the students' expectations.

While it's true that videoconferencing provides students with less opportunity for peer interaction than they receive in a traditional classroom, this has not proven to have any detrimental effect on learning or performance.
